There comes a time when you can no longer walk away. You know too much. You've seen too much. You've felt the blessing and the hand of God upon you and you know that now no matter what happens, you will never walk away. You're in too deep. You're too far gone... And you can now say, "God, my shepherd! I don't need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I'm not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd's crook makes me feel secure. You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing. Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I'm back home in the house of God for the rest of my life." Psalm 23 (The Message)
When I first became a Christian, I didn't plan to walk away. No one does. But people do walk away and I was sure that none of them planned to walk away either. So what happened? Why would someone who has been seemingly changed chuck it all and go back to their old, lost way of life? You've heard the saying, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." That can mean two things. One being that when things are tough, the tough continue on and find a way through it. Or two, when things get difficult, the so called "tough" flee to the easier road. Well, no one said the life of a follower of Christ would be easy or simple. Life is hard and even with the Lord walking beside you, behind you and in front of you, it is still hard. Sometimes people give up too soon. They can't see the light at the end of the tunnel so they throw in the towel because it's so dark and they cannot see. The problem is that it is always darkest before the dawn. Don't give up before the light comes. Hang on! Help is on the way! Sometimes God is an 11th hour God. There are things we need to learn, things He wants to teach us and there may be no other way for us to learn them than for us to trudge though the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
"Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" Isaiah 3-:20-21 (NIV)
In the valley, we often learn what is truly important and what is superfluous. It also says, "So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, 'You must be holy because I am holy.' And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time as 'foreigners in the land.' For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days. Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. As the Scriptures say, 'People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.' And that word is the Good News that was preached to you." 1 Peter 1:1-15 (NLT)
So if you have decided to follow Jesus, make it a permanent decision, a commitment that you will not go back on. Decide to continue. Decide to dedicate your life to Him. Keep walking forward, away from the darkness and toward the light. "The crowd responded, 'We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?' Jesus replied, 'My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.'" John 12:34-35 (NLT)
"This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there's not a trace of darkness in him. If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we're obviously lying through our teeth—we're not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God's Son, purges all our sin." 1 John 1:5-7 (The Message)
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, 'This was he of whom I said, "He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me."' From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another." John 1:14-16 (NIV)
Dear Lord, If we are not already there, please get us to the place where we have seen Your light and beheld Your glory such that we are no longer able to do anything but continue to follow You. Thank you for Your great love which brought the true light into the world. Help us to hear Your voice that says, "This is the way; walk in it!"

"For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we could ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." Ephesians 3:14-21

Salt and Light
Matthew 5:13-20 (The Message)
Salt and Light
13"Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage." 14-16"Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven."Completing God's Law
17-18"Don't suppose for a minute that I have come to demolish the Scriptures— either God's Law or the Prophets. I'm not here to demolish but to complete. I am going to put it all together, pull it all together in a vast panorama. God's Law is more real and lasting than the stars in the sky and the ground at your feet. Long after stars burn out and earth wears out, God's Law will be alive and working." 19-20"Trivialize even the smallest item in God's Law and you will only have trivialized yourself. But take it seriously, show the way for others, and you will find honor in the kingdom. Unless you do far better than the Pharisees in the matters of right living, you won't know the first thing about entering the kingdom."Dear Lord, Please make us salt and light. Make us a flavorful seasoning with which Your word becomes known in this world. Let us shine the light that You have given us before men and women everywhere that they might see You and glorify You. Help us to live lives that are loving and giving but not compromising or trivializing any aspect of Your Holy Word.

Redeeming Love has been My Theme and Shall be 'til I Die
"In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." 1 John 4:10 (NASB) The atonement of our sins comes through the precious blood of the Lamb. The debt that we owe fell on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who gladly laid down His life for us. He paid a debt He did not owe because we owed a debt we could not pay.
Feeling like a broken record isn't necessarily a bad thing. God's word says, "Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them." Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV) It also says, "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes." Deuteronomy 6:6-8 (ESV) We should be speaking of the great blessings He has poured out on us continually and we should not be ashamed of having the "theme" for our lives be His redeeming love. He wants our lives to be focused on Him. He wants us to focus the lives of others, our children, our families, our neighbors, our friends, our communities, and even those in far off places that we do not know, on Him...
How shall we do this? We must make Him and only Him the center of our lives. We must make His redeeming love the theme of our lives. And we must keep that theme as the very esscence of life for our whole lives. We cannot have Him as the focus and be selfish people. We cannot have Him as the focus and still make unscriptural choices, or be hurtful and mean to others. We cannot have Him as the focus and continue to go out and do things our own way! We have to listen to Him and make things right. We have to ask forgiveness when we make a mistake and live in such a way..."Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16 (NASB) "If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." Romans 14:8 (NIV) We need to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit who convicts our hearts of wrongdoing and we should live so the people around us can see the Lord. "But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:7 (NIV)
1 Peter 1:17-19 says, "Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." (NIV)
"Justice and judgment are the habitation of Thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before Thy face. Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of Thy countenance. In Thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted." Psalm 89:14-16 (KJV)
Dear Lord, Make us to walk in the light as You are in the light. Let our theme always be Your redeeming love and let us walk in a manner worthy of the calling You have given us for if You are lifted up, You will draw all men to You.
